Desaru

Located at the south-eastern corner of Johor, Desaru is the ideal beach destination with over 25km of white sandy beaches fringed by palm trees and casuarinas. Here, enjoy a myriad of water sports including snorkelling, water-skiing, canoeing, wind-surfing and sailing. Other forms of recreation include learning to fly an ultra-light aircraft; go-karting; jungle trekking; horseback riding, archery and off-road adventures

The annual sporting extravaganza Desaru International Triathlon attracts participants from throughout the region. Just a few kilometres away, discover more about the lifestyle of local fishermen at Tanjung Balau Fishermen's Museum.

Accommodations include hotels, budget chalets, dormitories and camp sites. Most notable is the luxurious Desaru Golf and Country Club resort, which has a 36-hole international standard golf course.

Getting There

By Road

Desaru is easily accessible via public transportation from Johor Bahru (the capital of Johor), Kota Tinggi or Tanjung Belungkor. Buses to Johor Bahru are available from Kuala Lumpur.

By Sea

There is a ferry service from Changi Point in Singapore to Tanjung Belungkor, where transport to Desaru can be arranged.

Teluk Ramunia

Lying at a cape about 90km from Kota Tinggi town, this beach is a popular tourist destination in Johor. For this very reason, Teluk Ramunia has several beach resorts that caters to the needs of budget travellers as well as those who seek a bit more comfort at a reasonable price. A sea sports centre is available here that rents out various water sports equipment.

Visitors can look forward to having a fun time trying out various adrenaline-pumping water activities including kayaking, canoeing and jet-skiing. The more sedentary visitors can opt for a nice bicycles ride, enjoying the serene and nostalgic kampung scenery, or explore the nearby township of Sungai Rengit that serves the fishing community here.

To get here, head for Kota Tinggi town and travel for 47km then turn left near the Petronas gas station. From this junction, travel for another 5km. At the first round-about, turn right (at 3 o'clock) and travel for another 24km to reach Teluk Ramunia Beach

Datai Beach

Datai Beach is considered as the most exclusive beach in Langkawi island. Situated in the north-west of the island, it is way off the main road but it offers gorgeous sights, including a view of Thailand’s coast-line on a clear day. Besides beaching yourself, you can also explore the surrounding tropical rainforest and admire the gems of Malaysia’s natural heritage.

Getting There:

By Plane
Daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur are available via Malaysia Airlines. Optionally Air Asia also has regular flights to Langkawi.

By Rail
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) connects Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar and Arau towns in Kedah. From these towns, you can catch a taxi or a bus to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis respectively and catch a ferry to Langkawi.

By Boat
From Kuala Kedah (1 hour 15 minute ride), from Kuala Perlis(45 minutes). Ferries are also available from Penang

By Road
From the North South Expressway (NSE), head north to Kedah and take the Alor Setar Selatan exit (Interchange 177) onto the highway headed to Teluk Kechai and on to Kuala Kedah where you can catch a ferry to Langkawi island. Alternatively, you can also catch ferries from Kuala Perlis further north, accessible via the Jitra Selatan exit (Interchange 181) via Kodiang and Kangar on trunk road K3. This route is longer, at 48km from the NSE exit. Teluk Datai is about 30 km or 30 minutes drive north from the Langkawi International Airport at Padang Mat Sirat.
